Who This Policy Covers

This policy applies to Rooofread at rooofread.com and www.rooofread.com. For privacy questions or requests, contact Rooofread at info@rooofread.com.

When You Contact Us

If you email us, we receive your email address, any name you provide, your message, attachments and the usual email delivery information. We use this information to respond, consider story ideas, handle corrections or advertising enquiries, and keep a record of the conversation. Please share only what is needed. Do not send identification documents, banking details or other sensitive information.

The question box opens a draft in your own email app. It does not submit your text to Rooofread or save it on our servers. We receive the message only if you send it. Your email provider may save the draft under its own settings and privacy policy.

When You Browse

Cloudflare provides website hosting and delivery. It may process technical information such as your IP address, browser and device information, requested pages, request times and security signals to deliver and protect the site. Some technical information may be retained in service or security logs.

The site uses Google Analytics to understand visits and page use. The Google tag can collect usage and device information and use cookies. See Google’s privacy policy. Hosting and security services may also use technical storage or cookies.

Calculators and Browser Storage

Our calculators, including Could I Live There?, run calculations in your browser. The calculator code does not send your income, savings, debts, housing costs or other financial inputs to Rooofread, Supabase, Resend or an analytics service. Ordinary page visits and successful signup events are still subject to the browsing and newsletter practices described in this policy.

When available, the calculators save your inputs and model settings in this tab’s session storage under rooofread-tools-v1. This lets you continue using your inputs during the browser session. “Clear my inputs” resets those saved figures to the calculator’s defaults. Closing the tab normally ends session storage, but a browser may restore a previous session, so use “Clear my inputs” when finished on a shared device. If session storage is unavailable, the calculator keeps inputs only on the current page.

A separate session-storage flag, rooofread-calculator-newsletter-v1, remembers successful signup so the calculator does not ask again in that tab. A local-storage flag, rr_subscribed, remembers successful signup in the browser for future signup prompts. These flags contain a signup marker, not your email address or financial inputs. Local storage can remain between visits until you or the browser clear it. You can remove these flags through your browser’s site-data controls. Clearing calculator inputs or browser data does not unsubscribe you; use the email unsubscribe link or contact us to stop newsletter emails.

Story Indicators

We save which stories you have opened in this browser’s local storage so the “New” indicator can disappear. This reading preference stays in your browser and is not sent to Rooofread. It does not sync between devices. Clearing site data resets the indicators; if browser storage is unavailable, the indicators are hidden.

Email, Service Providers and Other Websites

Our service providers include Cloudflare for website hosting, delivery and signup-request processing; Supabase for subscriber-record storage; Resend for newsletter and welcome-email delivery and unsubscribe preferences; Zoho Mail for correspondence sent to our Rooofread inbox; and Google for site analytics and the operator’s signup-notification inbox. Each processes information needed for its role.

Our subscriber database is configured in a United States region. Other processing and storage may also take place outside your province or Canada, where different laws and lawful government access requirements may apply. See the privacy policies of Cloudflare, Supabase, Resend, Zoho and Google for their practices.

Links to sources and other websites take you to services with their own privacy practices. Rooofread does not control those sites.

How Information Is Shared

We do not sell personal information or provide your contact details to advertisers for their marketing. Information may be handled by the service providers supporting the site, newsletter, subscriber records and inboxes, or disclosed where required or permitted by law, including to address security incidents or protect legal rights.

Sending a question does not give us permission to publish your name, email address or private correspondence. If we want to identify you or quote your private message in a story, we will ask first. A question may inspire coverage without identifying its sender.

Newsletter Signup and Email

Newsletter signup is active on our Subscribe page, in signup forms across the site, and at the final step for Realistic and Deep Dive calculator results. Quick calculator results are available without signup. Submitting a newsletter form signs you up for Rooofread’s housing newsletter, normally sent on Monday and Thursday, and a welcome email. Emailing us with a question does not subscribe you.

The signup form sends your email address and a placement label, such as an article form or calculator page, to our subscription endpoint at /api/subscribe. We use the address to maintain the mailing list and send the emails you requested. We use the placement label to understand where signups come from and improve our signup forms. The subscriber record also includes an identifier, signup time, subscription status and welcome-email processing status. Your calculator figures are not included in this signup request.

Cloudflare handles the signup request. We store subscriber records in Supabase and use Resend for welcome and newsletter emails, email delivery records and unsubscribe preferences. A new signup also generates an administrative notification containing the email address and signup time, sent through Resend to Rooofread’s operator in a Google-hosted Gmail inbox. We use that notification to administer the newsletter.

After a successful signup response, the site sends a signup event to Google Analytics with the placement label and page path. Our signup code does not include your email address or calculator figures in that event. A successful response can include an address already on the list, so this event is not necessarily a count of new subscribers.

You can stop newsletter emails using the unsubscribe link in a newsletter, which is handled by Resend, or ask us to withdraw your newsletter consent by emailing info@rooofread.com. Submitting the same address again does not automatically override an existing unsubscribe preference. Unsubscribing stops newsletter delivery; it does not automatically erase every signup, delivery or correspondence record. To request access, correction or deletion, use the contact route below.

Advertising Enquiries

Advertising enquiries are handled through email.

Keeping and Protecting Information

Subscriber records, unsubscribe preferences, delivery records and administrative notifications are held in the services described above. Unsubscribing does not itself delete those records. You can contact us about the information associated with your address and request deletion. Removal from provider logs or backups may be subject to the provider’s retention processes.

Correspondence is kept as needed to handle the enquiry, maintain relevant editorial or business records, and meet applicable legal obligations. Information no longer needed should be deleted or anonymized, subject to applicable requirements and service-provider backup retention. We do not promise immediate removal from all backups.

We use hosted services to support secure delivery and email handling. No website, email system or method of storage is completely secure. Please avoid sending sensitive material through the general inbox.

Your Choices and Requests

You can ask to access or correct personal information we hold about you, request deletion, or withdraw consent for a particular use by emailing info@rooofread.com. We may need to verify your identity. We will explain any legal or practical limits on a request, including records we must retain, and respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. Withdrawing consent may mean we cannot continue handling your enquiry.

If a privacy concern is not resolved, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the applicable provincial privacy regulator.

Changes to This Policy

We will update the date above when this policy changes. If a change introduces a new purpose for personal information, we will provide notice and seek consent where required before that use begins.
